Winter Berry Red Wine Spritzer
In just a few short weeks, we’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving with friends and family. We love to entertain around the holidays and when it’s our turn to host, our shopping list can become quite long. Other than the turkey, stuffing, potatoes and pies, there is one other essential that we never ever forget — the wine!
Today I went shopping for wine, namely a red blend which is the perfect pairing for a rich and flavorful turkey dinner. Look for warm, toasty aromas and flavors, including jammy blackberry, vanilla, and baking spices.
When we host a dinner party, I love to create a signature drink for our guests. This Winter Berry Red Wine Spritzer is flavorful and refreshing combination of red wine, Italian soda and frozen fruit. I love to serve it mule-style inside my favorite copper mugs because they keep the drink perfectly chilled and delightfully bubbly. It’s perfectly festive and delicious and will set the tone for upcoming holiday dinners.
You could skip the sugared rosemary but they look like snow-covered glistening trees, so why would you want to? They’re super easy to make: Just dip each sprig into water, then sprinkle with superfine sugar and lay flat to dry on wax paper or parchment.
What I love about this cocktail, as with most of the recipes we feature here is that it is fuss-free. Typically the holiday dinners we host include upwards of 20 guests, so I’ll take easy when I can get it. I love to roast my turkey after I’ve done a quick seasoning and stuff it with fresh herbs.

What does “rjs” stand for? We drink your wines with pleasure.
Hi David, Thank your for your question and we’re so happy to hear you enjoy our wines. The name RJS is an homage to our brand’s over 65 year heritage. In 1952, Harry Spagnol bought a grocery store and began dispensing wine juice and grapes from his store to home winemakers. As the business grew with demand, they started producing wine kits by 1982. The business was acquired by Vincor and became Spagnols Wine & Beer Making Supplies. In 2000, RJ Grape and Spagnols merged to create Canada’s leading wine and beer making supplier – RJ Spagnols. In 2013, we updated our name to RJS Craft Winemaking.
Club soda lightens this bubbly version of Kentucky's classic drink, rendering it even more refreshing.

If you are watching the news right now, you know that much of the country is blanked in snow and ice storms. This morning I was packing for a trip to Chicago, and now I am frantically calling the airlines trying to see if I can even get out of New York sometime this weekend!
You see, I am supposed to be attending the International Home and Housewares Show this weekend. Imagine for a moment, a huge convention space with aisle after aisle of the newest and coolest kitchen ware, gadgets, appliances, and tabletop decorations. Sounds like heaven, right? For passionate cooks like us, it certainly is!
As I am attempting to re-book, I figured I would share with you a couple of vendors who will be showcasing their products at the show. Plus, a light and refreshing red wine spritzer to sip is exactly what I need while waiting on hold!
One of the newest additions to my kitchen is this Magic Chef Portable Countertop Ice Maker.
I love this appliance because it can make ice in as little as 7 minutes! In fact, it can make up to 27 lb. of ice per day to help provide you with a steady supply of ice. It is just what you need to continuously fill your ice bucket or beverage pitchers when you are entertaining friends and family.
I am excited to stop by the Magic Chef booth to see what other exciting products and appliances they have to offer this year!
Another booth that is always a “must see” at the show is breathtaking tabletop offerings from Iittala. I am a huge fan of this Finnish brand and my kitchen cabinets are stocked with their stunning dishes and glassware.
This Berry Red Wine Spritzer was photographed in the “IIttala Ultima Thule” double old fashioned glass.
Ultima Thule glassware was designed in 1968 and was used in the first Finnair flight in 1969, and later in their first class cabin service. The term “ultima thule” was used in medieval times to refer to places “beyond the known world,” or sometimes, to Scandinavia. Evocative of an icy landscape of the furthest reaches, Ultima Thule is the most popular line of glassware ever produced by Iittala.
For minute to minute coverage from the show, be sure to stay tuned to our Twitter and Instagram pages throughout the weekend and early next week!
Easy Wine Spritzer
Wine spritzers are lovely little wine-based drinks that feature a splash of sweet soda and taste summery fresh. They are easy to make, and endlessly adaptable.
Wine spritzers were undoubtedly the inspiration for the wine coolers of the late 1980s and early '90s. While not a novel concept, they are enjoyed in many wine-producing regions under different names. In Germany, for example, this cocktail is dubbed "süssgespritzter," referring to wine or cider mixed with lemonade or a citrus-inspired soda. On the canals of Venice, Italians enjoy a spritz Veneziano (or, simply, "spreetz"), a refreshing combination of sparkling wine, Aperol (an Italian orange liqueur), and soda water. The French 75, created in France around World War I, mixes champagne with gin, simple syrup, and lemon juice.
A wine spritzer is perfect when you have a bottle of white, red, or rosé wine on hand and the temperature outside is balmy. The ice and soda turn what could potentially be too heavy a drink for summer into a refreshing cocktail that is not only cooling but also lower in alcohol strength. Adding some fresh seasonal fruit to your glass makes it even more refreshing.
This Easy Mixed Berry Vodka Spritzer Recipe will be the easiest drink you'll ever make!
- 1 - 1.5 ounces (or more if you like) of your favorite brand of vodka
- 1 - 3 drops of mixed berry water flavor enhancer
- 8+ oz sparkling water or club soda, chilled
- Frozen berries of choice (I used blueberries)
- In a 12 oz or larger glass add ice or frozen berries, if desired. I prefer to use the berries as they keep the drink cold without watering it down.
- Pour vodka over ice/berries.
- Add number of desired water enhancer drops to the vodka and berries.
- Slowly pour sparkling water over other ingredients.
- Gently stir your drink, taste to see if you want to add more vodka, sparkling water or water enhancer for your personal preference, and enjoy.
You can also use other liquors if you prefer, like rum. I sometimes like to add other fresh berries, too.

Quite some time ago, I quit drinking soda. It was a New Year resolution about 4-5 years ago and probably one of the hardest things that I have done in a long time.
You don’t realize the craving you get for certain things until you cut them out of your life.
To this day I still crave soda every once in awhile, and I do have the occasional (few and far between) glass but I have come to a realization that it’s not so much the flavor of the soda I miss so much… but the carbonation that it has instead.
So I have begun buying sparkling waters as a replacement. Unfortunately, that can get pricey and some of the sparkling waters out there have added stuff that make them not much better for you than drinking a soda.
So it defeats the entire purpose.
Recently, I had the chance to try out the all new SodaStream Power Automatic Sparkling Water Maker and I have to say it was love at first fizz.
The SodaStream Power is specifically a sparkling water maker and you have the control and choice of how much fizz and bubbles you want! Which makes it much easier to help you break the habit of drinking soda and switching to more water instead.
It is also super simple to use with just the touch of a button after snapping the included bottle into place. Bonus that it matches all my other appliances, with it’s black and silver sleek design (it comes in white, too).
I’ve been using my SodaStream Power for some time now and literally make 3-4 bottles of sparkling water everyday…. but with the holidays coming up, I wanted to see if I could make some fun cocktails with the sparkling water.
I figured a spritzer would be the perfect thing!
For this beautiful red wine spritzer, I wanted to try something a little different than a traditional sangria or holiday cocktail. I used the SodaStream berry mix flavor and mixed it with my favorite red wine for something a little lighter and more refreshing that just a regular glass of red wine.
This cocktail would definitely make the perfect drink for any of your holiday celebrations or parties that might be coming up – I know I’ll be making it for mine!
